Why We Don't Achieve What We Want

Delivered at Global Faith Coalition World Congress Nairobi Kenya 22-26 Aug 2023                                by  Howard Sands

Vision and Goals

Howard Sands preaching at Global Faith Coalition World Congress, Nairobi, Kenya Aug 2023.

Volunteers  needed for demonstration

5 occupations - dentist, hairdresser, mechanic, doctor, pharmacist

5 Volunteers – all with the same problem but different response actions

Person with very sore open infected leg, painful, weeping sore.

Same problem – different beliefs and actions

Who to go to, to get leg fixed?

1/ Visits dentist, my leg is sore, dentist says, open your mouth,

I see the problem, your back molar is twisted it needs to come out.

Reaction – I am not sure.

2/ Lady, my friend is a hairdresser, I need a haircut, I will go and ask her.

Sitting in chair getting her hair done and asks about leg

I see the problem, its not clean, I recommend this shampoo to all my customers it works wonders for them, take some and try it.

Shampoo on leg – condition gets worse and more painful.

3/ Smart guy, My mechanic says he can fix anything, he’s fixed my car many times.

I see the problem, If you put this high grade oil in your car it works better, maybe it will work for your leg too.

Puts oil on leg, infection and pain worse.

4/ Even smarter guy, Maybe I should go to the doctor. Visits doctor.

I see the problem, you have an infection, we need to kill the bacteria with cream and antibiotic tablets, go get these and apply cream to leg and take antibiotics, come back and see me in a week.

Man goes to Pharmacy,  the cream is cheap but the tablets expensive.

Doesn’t buy tablets because he can’t afford.

Leg stops weeping but infection swelling and pain still there,

back to doctor in a week.

I couldn’t afford tablets but why is my leg not better?

5/ Even smarter still lady, Maybe I should go to the doctor.

Visits doctor

I see the problem, you have an infection, we need to kill the bacteria with cream and antibiotic tablets, go get these and apply cream to leg and take antiobiotics, come back and see me in a week.

Goes to pharmacy, gets cream, can’t afford tablets, goes home to family and friends, I have to get $X, searches, asks, borrows from family friends, goes back to pharmacy, gets tablets and uses.

After a week goes back to doctor, leg healed.

POINT

Don’t take your advice from someone who is not experienced AND qualified in the appropriate field.

Take the action recommended by the expert.

Do Whatever it Takes.

Jesus had goals

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. Lk 8.22

Then a storm came but he stilled the storm because he had a goal.

He did not say, let's go out in the boat, go to the middle of the lake and drown in a big storm.

He had a goal and did whatever it took to complete the goal.

Set his face to go to Jerusalem Luke 9.51

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

Had clear goals and pursued them, in spite of difficulties.

Difference between a failure and a person who has failed.

you are NOT a failure, you are more than conquerors, BUT …

you may have failed:-

And continue to fail

perhaps because

You take advice from unqualified people

You don’t follow the advice of experts

Have been beaten by the circumstances, economy, culture, resistant people

BUT you don’t have to stay there …

You may have a general idea of a vision you want to follow

But most will not get there

Because:-

  • you don’t even ask any questions
  • some ask, but not the right questions,
  • you don’t ask the right people and
  • when you do get good advice, you don’t follow it.

You are either:-

  • Stubborn
  • Rebellious
  • Stupid
  • Or looking for a quick way or shortcut

What does God say about the person that knows to do good but does not do it?

To him who fails to respond to God, to him it is sin.

To act without faith is sin.

A few succeed,

They follow the advice of the expert

and act on it

and persist in faith despite obstacles until it works.

A success is a person that got up and tries again after every failure.

A failure is one who says:-

  • It can’t be done
  • I don’t know how to do it
  • I can’t afford it
  • It’s too hard
  • Nobody will help me
  • In our country you can’t do that because – long list of cultural, economic or social excuses.

Elite Sportspeople spend hours, weeks months and years in obscurity – practicing for their big moment.

But the sports stars all have one thing that most Christian leaders lack -

GOALS

Clearly defined, exact objective, time specific

And a

Strategy to get to the goal.

If it costs you nothing you will not value it.

if the cost is beyond your natural means, must use faith and persistence to obtain.

Stop looking for a free everything.

Some won’t come to an event if it’s not free lunch.

Free will not help you.

Pay for it and appreciate it.

I apologies on behalf of all western missionaries that have come to you and taught by their example that you don’t have to pay for anything.

They have (perhaps unknowingly), taught you a poverty mentality.

You must escape the poverty mentality.

Those wanting a free lunch are free loaders – they will still be looking for a free lunch when Jesus comes and their excuse for not doing the job will be we couldn’t afford it.

Lk 13.27 But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’

John 6.26Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

If you have a vision, but no goals

You will –

  • Never know what is best to do next
  • Easily get diverted from the best path
  • Not knuckle down and work hard because there is no deadline
  • And never know whether you have achieved your goal.

Follow the blueprint

Exodus 25:9 You must make the tabernacle and design all its furnishings according to the pattern ...

As part of our program to help you learn how to hear God and set Godly specific goals for your ministry we have established

Growing African Christian Leaders facebook group

We discovered by asking admission questions.

1/ What is the biggest goal you have in your ministry? Share the specific activity or project, the deadline and measurement.

Less than 10% could provide a clear goal.

We changed question to:-

1/ What is the next big goal/project your ministry is working towards? Include specific project, how many, what size, describe the people by location, ethnicity, age, gender, interest or other factor & date to achieve.

Still only 17% can explain a clear goal that they have.

That's why we provide this training, to help you understand, create goals and fulfil them.

Now after more 3000 applications, & 2500+ waiting to get in that didn’t provide answers at all.

We can clearly say that:-

Africans need help with setting goals.

That’s why we have a 10 Day Challenge to show you how to hear from God and do it, and take your ministry to the next level in 10 days – and its free,

but you won’t learn if you don’t do the assigned tasks.

God's 100%

Competitive Excellence requires 100% .

What would we think of our elite athletes if they didn't give a 100% effort ?
If they didn't train thoroughly, rigorously, if they didn't eat right, sleep right, give it everything they've got, and then some.

Competitive Excellence requires 100% effort all the time

If you doubt that try setting your standard at 92% or even 95%.

People figure they're doing fine if they get close.

Excellence gets reduced to acceptable,
before long acceptable is not worth the sweat,
before you know it mediocrity sets in.

When is good enough, good enough?
I suggest good enough is good enough for us, when good enough is good enough for God - NEVER.

What would happen if 99.9% were good enough?
The US Inland Revenue would loose 2 million documents this year.
12 new babies would be given to the wrong parents -every day.
291 pacemaker operations would be performed incorrectly.
20,000 incorrect drug prescriptions would be written.
114,500 mismatched pairs of shoes would be shipped.

If God thought 99.9% were good enough some verses of Scripture would have to be re written
eg
Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as light pink;

Mat 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God most things are possible.

He has not withheld anything from us.

Rom 5. 8 While we were still sinners Christ died for us.
Sin (the vile, the corrupt, the abusive, the hateful, the perverted, the selfish) the thing that separates us from God. Gal 5.19/21.
The wages of sin is death. Rom 6.23

God gave up his son to pay the price for you and me.
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Jesus gave up his position with God to be made in human form - how degrading.

Phil 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Jesus said, It is good enough for the student to be like the master Matt 10.25

Jesus called people to follow him;
  • not have their name on a church membership roll,
  • but to live like he lived (totally unselfishly),
  • he called people to lay down their lives for him,
  • not to say they believe in him,
  • he called people to give up everything for him 100%,
  • not put offerings in the plate.

Matt 10.37/39 Anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.

Peter thought he'd given up everything for Jesus.
Mark 10.28/30 Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.”
29 So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, 30 who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.

Jesus response - you will receive 100 times as much in this present age.

eg Raymond Lull
Although often disappointed by high officials, Lull was tireless in the pursuit of his project.
Finally, he received permission to initiate professorships of Oriental languages at the universities of Paris, Oxford, and Salamanca. He longed to see the entire church vitally involved in missions, setting aside its best preachers as missionaries, equipping them with linguistic skills, and devoting a tenth of its wealth until the world was won for Christ. He wanted to be personally involved.

To prepare himself, he studied Arabic for many years.
With books and baggage stowed on board, Raymond Lull's ship set sail for North Africa but Lull remained on the dock!
He was frozen with fright.
Only when he boarded another ship for Africa was his peace of mind restored. Lull would never balk in the face of danger again.

In Tunis, Lull debated so vigorously with Muslims that he was arrested and sentenced to death. Lull's sincerity eventually saved him from death, but he was put on board a ship for home and told never to return to Tunis.

Undaunted, he escaped from his ship and continued to teach his converts in hiding. The Muslims in Africa had captured his heart. Lull ventured once more into North Africa.

He was asked once how he could be so bold. Lull, once so fearful, replied: "Death has no terrors for a sincere servant of Christ who is endeavouring to bring the knowledge of truth."

In ensuing years, Lull was imprisoned, deported again, shipwrecked and finally, around age 80, stoned to death in North Africa, the year was 1312.

How different would the world be now if more had followed him and taken up the cause of missions then.

How much do we love God?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Considering what he has done for us, how can we not give him every ounce of time/ love/ energy/ money/ possessions.

I've often wondered what would happen if people were as intense and committed and determined about the church of Jesus Christ as they are about sports.

This was illustrated some years back in a Moody Monthly piece which illustrated the twelve excuses someone might use for 'giving up going to sports matches.'
The analogy isn't hard to figure out.

12 Excuses
12/ Every time I went, they asked me for money.
11/ The people where I sat didn't seem very friendly.
10/ The seats were too hard and not comfortable.
9/  The coach never came to call on me.
8/  The referee made a decision with which I could not agree.
7/  I was sitting with some hypocrites - they came only to see what others were wearing.
6/  Some game's went into overtime, and I was, late getting home.
5/ The band played songs, that I had never heard before.
4/ The game's are scheduled when I want to do other things.
3/ My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up.
2/ Since I read a book on sport, I feel that I know more than the coaches anyhow.
1/ I don't want to take my children, because I want them to choose for themselves what sport they like best.

I've come up with a few more:-
  • The car park was awful- I had to walk six blocks to the stadium.
  • Nobody came up and introduced themselves to me.
  • It was very impersonal, and it was too loud!
  • The public address and lighting system, didn't suit me.
  • It's always too hot (or cold) in the stadium.
  • An usher offended me.
  • They sold out one Sunday and I had to watch the game on TV.

God will assume total responsibility for the life totally yielded to him.
~Andrew Murray.

Be radical, give your life to Jesus - all of it.

Unbelieving Believers

I read a challenging piece recently by Dr Bernard Etta when speaking of the 7000 prophets who had not bowed the knee to Baal (1 Kings 19.18); he said. "I have no respect for such prophets who lived in a nation taken over by Idolatry and evil but chose to remain silent. Not bowing to Baal is good, but not enough to transform a society or nation. True prophets confront the idolatry in the land and speak again sin in both high and low places with a vision of taking back the nation for God. You don't need 7000 prophets to change a nation, just one true prophet is enough."

A little similar to today's church I believe, 'and the love of many will wax cold.'
They say they are believers but when it comes to issues of sin and righteousness and judgement they are cold and silent.

It has been said "all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing," (often attributed to Edmund Burke but disputed) how true it is.  Burke also said, "Nothing is so fatal to religion as indifference."
If 7000 prophets who had not bowed the knee to Baal had spoken up, how different might the situation have been. If millions of 'so called' Christians learn to live with evil in the world and around them in their community instead of denouncing it and setting aright the ills of society, what will be the outcome of the Jezebels?
DO NOT DISTURB

Today we have professing believers filling church pews with no moral fortitude, Jesus said, "These signs shall follow them that believe" Mark 16.17 our churches seem to be full of those with only the "DO NOT DISTURB" sign around their necks, dare we say that many of our churches are filled with unbelieving believers?
To believe in Christ is to follow Him and be His disciple; "I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father." John 14.12
Are we doing the works?
Are the signs following?
Are we expecting the signs to follow?
or have we just become humanitarian tolerants?
The words of Christ command obedience, if obedience to His way is not there, are we in fact His disciple at all?
Society will always have its malevolent, those intent on their own perverted gain at the expense of good morals and judgement, its wicked, evil and sinister plotters to bring down anything that is upright, moral, good or godly for it is an affront to them, for they desire to remove any semblance of righteousness or God from their lives, for then (in their minds only) their is no account to give to God.
It is encumbent upon us to heed the warning given by God to Ezekiel, “Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.” Ezekiel 18.26/27
Society in many nations (not restricted to western nations) is crumbling for lack of absolute values, where everything is questioned and many outcomes are questionable, it behoves those that have the truth that delivers (and has delivered for thousands of years for those that follow it,)  peace, stability, prosperity and godliness to share it with those of the community hellbent on destroying righteousness in society and themselves along with it to a torturous hell for those who reject God.
Don't let your religion crumble around you for lack of attention to it.

Your Word is Power

© Howard Sands 2016

Intro
You have the power to do good or to do evil
James 3.3-5 The Tongue has power to create or destroy
It boasts great things
Matt 8.8 Centurion said, speak the word only

A miracle is something that happens outside the natural laws
- we say God did that.

Today we will see what God says about it.

1/Speaking Creative Words
I have taken many team trips to India and Africa - we spoke creative words, even before we went we said , we will Go, see 100's saved, healed, Baptised in Holy Spirit, receive revelation.

"What you say is what you get" Jesus said that
Mk 11.22/24 Jesus publicly said, no one eat fruit of you ever again.
When they came back that evening, tree was withered and dried up, Jesus gave them a powerful truth.
Peter says He cursed the fig tree.
He just spoke death to it.
It had to obey him.
We have cursed ourselves and others by the words of our mouth,
“Its getting worse... there is no cure … I have to take this medication for the rest of my life … I'm feeling this cold coming on.”

Stop saying what the devil puts in your mouth and start confessing what God gave you to say.
Because whatever you say – Jesus said you can have.
Jesus said, Have faith in God, or more literally, "Have the God kind of faith."
Jesus explained how it works.
Speak God's words until they become part of you, "...out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."
Some people say they can't, they're right.
Some people say they can, they're right.

If you say you can't, you don't, not because you can't but because you won't.
What you say is what you get.

eg. Flight, Sri Lanka to India, we were not allowed to confirm, we said we're going on that plane, plane 10hrs late, finally allowed on, we went.

Phil 4.13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Today you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

If you'll believe it you'll receive it; If you don't, you won't.

2/ Planting the word as seed in you
Today we are going to do some implanting into you, what the word of God says about you.
Today we are going to help you
AVOID STINKIN THINKIN AND HARDENING OF THE ATTITUDES. (Zig Zigler)

IF YOU SAY ABOUT YOU WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT YOU, YOU'LL RECEIVE WHAT HE SAYS YOU'LL RECEIVE BECAUSE HE SAYS SO.
What are you believing
Do you fear, people, circumstances, your inabilities or do you say,
2 Tim 1.7 God has not given to me a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.

What about healing.
Do you believe God will heal you or can heal:
will is definite, can is a maybe.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Do you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that healing is the children's bread?
... that Christ bought your healing on Calvary.

Rom 10.9/10 with the heart man believes unto Righteousness with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Your confession is saving you every day, but what is it saving you into.

3/ Praying in faith.
Prayer is your legal right to use faith filled words to bring God on the scene on your behalf.

May Mark 11.24 live in you so you know that whatever YOU say, you will have.

Jesus said ask the Father in my name.
I want you you to see this -
Matt 10.33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. NIV
but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. ESV

Harsh words but He's not talking about salvation.
God and His word are one. Jesus is the word. So he who denies the word that God gave him denies Jesus.

Better read, but whoever denies me and my word (for they are one) before men (fails to say before men the word that I have given him about his circumstances), I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven. (deny to give his negative, failing unbelieving prayer to the Father).

Jesus confesses to the Father what we say provided it agrees with the word. Then our prayer is made by Jesus to the Father, the Father cannot do anything but grant that prayer.
If you confess my word before men, I'll confess what you say before the Father. Your prayer gets an audience with the Father presented by Jesus the intercessor.

4/ But I need more faith
Its OK for you but ….
stop right there.
Don't 'but' the word of God.

You may not have got to the place where you immediately and instictively say the word of God at your situation as soon as it arises, if not there's something you can do about it.
Follow what the word says to do to get more faith. Rom 10.17 Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

If you don't put it in in the good times you cant get out in the tough times.
Develop your faith muscle by speaking the word of God aloud to your circumstances, to your body, finances, family.

Mk 11.23 but believes that what he says is going to take place, it will be done for him  .
He doesn't have it now, its still coming.

Start saying what you want to happen NOT the worst that you fear might happen.
That's unbelief and you're believing in it.

5/ Salvation is in every area: Its a package deal,
you don't get one bit without the other

saved, Gk. sozo, saved, healed, delivered, made whole, preserved.

Nobleman's son near death
Jn 49/50 He believed Jesus word.
Matt 8.13 Centurion, as you have believed, so be it done.
Matt 9.22 woman with issue of blood, your faith has made you whole.

Captured on video, Mission to India
- a woman had a pain for many years, she came to the first day meeting,
we prayed for her, she believed, next day she testified of being healed
Man with heart condition took God at his word, came forward for prayer, believed and received his healing
Many received their sins forgiven because they dared to believe God's word and act on it, in 4 crusades about 500 people.

? Who is stronger, God or Satan ?
then why do some Christian folk still say: "the devil made me do it."
"The devil is having a go at me."
"I have this pain, disease etc."

1 Jn 4.4 Greater is He that is in you, than he than is in the world.

The devil didn't make you do, You believed his lie
2 Cor 2.14 God always causes me to triumph

1 Pet 2.24 By His stripes you WERE healed

2 Cor 3.17 Where the spirit of the Lord is their is liberty

Rom 8.1 There is therefore now, NO CONDEMNATION

Why do we say I can't:-  do it
                                       believe it
                                       afford it
when God says ask and you will receive,

Ps 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

Phil 4.19 My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Church in Kovalam: no natural means, meeting in little hut, tiny piece of ground
stepped out in faith, put 1500 Rs down on bigger piece of ground, Our first crusade, BFTF team and ministry gave donations to land purchase, raised funds through sales of pictures when we returned. Since sent them enough to buy land to increase size of church.

Pastor told me later they have bought land for 25,000 Rs an impossible task in the natural
They believed and acted in faith, God provided
Things with man that are impossible; are with God Himpossible.

According to your word, because your word is power.

Lets confess what we are
I am as bold as a lion
I have the mind of Christ
God is for me
Greater is He thats in me than he thats in the world
I am the righteousness of God
I am speaking His word
I am filled with faith, power and the Holy Spirit
I am an overcomer
I am more than a conqueror
I am born again by His Spirit
His life flows through me
I've been redeemed and set apart & I'll love and serve God all my life
By His stripes I am healed
I have no lack, His abundance is mine
I invoke blessing on my life by being a generous giver
I am set free from pain, sickness, disease.

LEARN TO SPEAK WITH YOUR EYES

Either your spirit or your mind is going to dominate your body.
Which is it going to be? its up to you.

When you were born again your spirit was recreated brand new (2Cor5.17) with the righteousness of God (2Cor5.21) made a participant in His Divine Nature (2Pet1.4) and was supposed to dominate your mind (Rom12.2) and body and bring them into subjection to the Kingdom of God. . . . . but. . . . sometimes your spirit doesn't dominate because you fail to act on what you know. You fail to speak the Word of God as God has put it in your heart, (Mk11.23) for if you did speak it in faith you would put God's own creative power to work in your circumstances. I'm not talking about blab it and grab it, I'm not talking about positive thinking or positive confession; I am talking about what the faith eye sees, the faith mind believes and the faith tongue speaks until it actually creates a living vital thing was was first seen by the eye of faith.

What can you see with your faith eye? What are you believing? People can tell what you are believing because they can hear what you say and see what you do. Your spirit can be seen by how you speak and act; is it taking control or is your lazy, unfruitful, backslidden, unregenerate, carnal mind taking charge? The best practise for changing your circumstances is to let your faith eyes do some speaking.
